Independent schools make ‘vibrant contribution’ to Ontario education
While many schools across Ontario will close Feb. 21 amidst a province-wide strike, it will be business as usual for Timothy Christian School (TCS) in west-end Toronto.
The private elementary school located in north Etobicoke is home to more than 85 families and 150 students from 46 area churches.
Founded in 1958, the school strives to fulfill its mission of educating and engaging students for a life of service in Christ’s kingdom.
The school provides smaller class sizes and strong student-teacher connections, with staff nurturing a safe learning environment.
Schools such as TCS are a solid alternative to the public education system, said Jacob Speelman, chair of the school’s board of directors.
“For 60 years, Timothy Christian School has provided strong educational opportunities for students in west Toronto,” he said. “We have an excellent staff that works hard to develop the God-given gifts of all of our students.”
One in five Ontario schools is independent, according to Deani Van Pelt, president of Edvance Christian Schools Association.
“Ontario’s independent school sector — almost 1,400 schools — makes a vibrant contribution to the education of the public in our province,” she said. “Parents of all backgrounds are increasingly looking to independent schools, such as Timothy Christian School, for an education environment that fits their child and their family.”
A recent study by Cardus, a faith-based think tank in Hamilton, found that independent religious school graduates are most likely to participate in nearly all Statistics Canada volunteering categories.
“Many of us are concerned about polarization, the loss of civility in our culture and a drop in charitable giving,” said Ray Pennings, executive vice-president at Cardus. “That’s why it’s so exciting to see Ontario’s independent schools counteracting these negative trends by producing graduates who are interested and lovingly involved in the world around them.”
